MIRI: This city reached a significant milestone in its international relations today with the signing of a Friendship City Agreement between the Miri City Council (MCC) and Guangning County, Zhaoqing City.

This event, celebrated as a momentous occasion, coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, symbolising the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang expressed his enthusiasm about the agreement, emphasizing the deep-rooted respect, equality, support, and trust that have long characterized the relationship between Malaysia and China.

“No matter how international circumstances change, the people of Malaysia and China have always treated each other with mutual respect, equality, support, and trust,” said Yii.

“Together, we have penned a new chapter of development, standing by each other through thick and thin,” he added.

The ceremony was graced by distinguished leaders, including His Excellency Consul General Xing Weiping, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, and the Secretary of the Guangning County Party Committee, Chen Chaochang.

Yii warmly welcomed the participation of Guangning County’s government and business leaders in Miri’s development, expressing hope for future exchanges that would strengthen urban governance and development.

Yii emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two cities, envisioning a future where Miri and Guangning County could serve as models of modern cooperation.

“Together, we can build a model of a civilized and harmonious city. In the future, I hope for more exchanges between our two cities, with continuous improvement in urban governance and development. We aim to jointly promote a diversified and inclusive economy, comprehensive trade, and other areas, making Miri City a model of modern cooperation,” he remarked.

The mayor also commended the efforts of the Miri Guangning Association, particularly under the leadership of founding president Ten Yu Chiong and Mingyang Education Group Chairman Gao Changcheng, for their significant contributions to the city.

He acknowledged their role in promoting numerous cultural, educational, trade, and tourism initiatives that have elevated Miri’s status on the global stage.

“The signing ceremony of the Friendship City agreement today is a historical milestone for Miri City,” said Yii.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to all the teams working behind the scenes and to the members of the Miri Guangning Association, including the current president, Shao Mihua.”

Yii fondly recalled his visit to Zhaoqing City and Guangning County in 2018, which was organized by the Miri Guangning Association. He described the experience as invaluable, filled with warm receptions and valuable insights.

The signing of the Friendship City Agreement is expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, and tourism, further solidifying the bond between Miri and Guangning County.
