MIRI: A fire at Kampung Long Mekaba in Baram left six families homeless in the early hours of Saturday.

The fire, which broke out around 3am, completely destroyed five houses, while a sixth house suffered partial damage.

Firemen from Zone 6 Miri fire and Rescue together with Marudi firemen are currently at the scene investigating the incident.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the homes were not occupied at the time of the blaze.

The affected families, consisting of 32 individuals, were in Miri town when the fire broke out.

Thanks to the quick action of villagers, one house situated nearby was saved from the flames.

The Marudi Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident, although by the time they arrived, the fire had already been extinguished.

The journey to the fire site, located approximately 400 kilometres from the Marudi Fire Station, took about eight hours along a challenging timber road.

After gathering information and securing the area, the fire team returned to Long Bedian to attend to another house fire in Kampung Long Selulung.
