MIRI: Numerous peat fires broke out along the Miri-Kuala Baram road for nearly 10 days.
Dozens of firefighters including those from Naim battled peat fires that occurred along the area.
The situation has resulted in thick haze shrouding most parts of the area and although some have been brought under control, some areas continue to burn.
Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Supt Law Poh Kiong has confirmed that the peat fires that occurred nearby Hamidah Complex in Kuala Baram were ‘malicious’ in nature.
“We found several dry leaves tied to a door knob which we believe were intended to start a fire on a piece of land that belongs to Naim Development,” he said.
The discovery has led them to file a police report.
“We believe that somebody intentionally started the fire because of the recent peat fires,” Law said.
Since August 1, Bomba Sarawak received a total 202 cases of peat fires state-wide, including 19 yesterday.
As of yesterday until 5pm, 32 firemen and 11 from Naim’s firefighting team have been mobilised to several areas in Kuala Baram to combat peat fires.
Kuala Baram recorded an API (Air Pollution Index) reading of 390 which is considered hazardous at 3pm yesterday.
Miri recorded a moderate API reading of 78.
