KUCHING: Opposition DAP has called on the state government to do something about the long-delayed construction of Sentoria Housing Phase 5 and 7 as well as Spectra Housing 1 and 2 here.

State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said nearly 1,000 house buyers were affected by the delay, of whom about 90 per cent are civil servants.

He called on the state government to step in and solve the problem faced these buyers who have had to bear the burden of servicing their loans in the meantime.

“We will collect the names of the house buyers and thereafter make an appointment with the Premier to discuss steps to resolve the issue,” he said during a press conference at Borneo Samariang Garden here today (Aug 27).

“I believe the current government has the ability to solve this housing issue that has been going on for far too long.

“I know that it takes a long time to go through the process of suing the developer and waiting for the appointment of a new developer to continue the project.

“It is tedious and takes a long time and I believe there are many ways to deal with this issue and it can be done because the government has the power and ability to take over the project.”

He added that the government can do more to protect the house buyers.

“The best solution now is for the government to urge the developer to hand over the long-delayed project so that it can be completed immediately.

“Due to the delay in the completion of the project, it has greatly affected the house buyers, especially in terms of finances because they have to pay for the house loan installments, as well as the rentals of the places they are staying in at the moment.”

He added that it has caused losses to the house buyers as they have been paying every month for for houses that they have not been able to live in.
