KUCHING: Qualified Sarawakians may have 1,000 jobs awaiting them in the state civil service this year.
This was made known during a courtesy call made on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.
The chief minister received two delegations yesterday, the first being from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) headed by its rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali.
The visit was meant to strengthen cooperation between the university and the Sarawak government in various fields such as research, entrepreneurship and smart farming.
Abang Johari’s second group of visitors was a delegation from the state Public Service Commission (SPA) led by its chairman Datuk Abdul Ghafur Shariff.
The visit was to inform the chief minister of the number of SPA members who had almost reached the full capacity of nine persons, two of whom had only been appointed this year.
He was also informed that the state SPA will strive to fulfill the vacancies in the state civil service.
He was informed that SPA is targeting to fill 1,000 or more vacancies this year.
Based on the records, 709 vacancies in the state civil service were filled in 2017, and 954 in 2018, which is an increase of 35 per cent.
For last year, out of 954 vacancies, 637 were from the state civil service while 317 were from local authorities (PBTs).
