101 evacuated from homes after Bintulu struck by flash floods

BINTULU: Several areas in the district here were reported to have been struck by flash floods following a heavy downpour last night (Oct 31).

Among the areas affected by the flood waters are Kampung Kemunting, Gem Park, Kampung Asyakirin, Rumah Ranyang Mile 8, Kampung Setinggan, Kampung Baru, Desa Damai and Bukit Orang.

A spokesman from the Civil Defence Force (APM) said due to the rising waters, a total of 77 residents from 25 families had to be evacuated from their homes.

A temporary flood relief centre (PPS) at the Civic Centre, was officially opened at 11.55pm and it provides shelter to residents from Kampung Kemunting, Kampung Asyakirin, Desa Damai, Kampung Baru and Bukit Orang.

It was reported that the water levels in the affected areas had risen since 9.05pm last night.

As of 7am, the weather in Bintulu was reported to be experiencing heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Bintulu firemen provided evacuation assistance to 24 residents from six families in Gem Park.

The residents decided to vacate their homes and stay at their relatives’ places temporarily.
