KUCHING: There are a total of 1,032 cooperatives registered in Sarawak as of June 2017 with a total membership of 320,000.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cooperative College of Malaysia, Professor Datuk Mohd. Yusof bin Kasim disclosed that in Sarawak alone these cooperatives have a total assets of RM558 million and a total earnings of RM140 million.
“In Kuching the number of cooperatives is 265 with membership of over 125,000 and assets worth RM452 million and earnings of more than RM84 million,” he said in his welcoming speech at the official closing of Program Lestari Modal Insan Koperasi “Transformasi Perniagaan Melalui Platform Digital: Potensi Dan Peluang” by Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Yusof, Minister of Works at Dewan Hikmah, Petra Jaya here last Tuesday.
According to Mohd Yusof, every year Cooperative College of Malaysia carried out various programmes such as short-term courses, seminars and on-line courses and the number of members of cooperatives participating in the training programmes conducted had also increased.
In 2016, he said there were a total of 40,000 participants compared to 32,000 participants in 2014.
“Last year, we trained more than 42,000 members when we only targeted 40,000,” he said.
