TATAU: A total of 12 graves were desecrated after a Christian cemetery in Sungai Bagiau Tatau fell victim to vandals.

Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis confirmed that they had received a report concerning the heinous act today (Oct 22).

“Investigations at the scene found that 11 women’s tombs and one man’s tomb had been broken into, with two to three feet-deep holes dug around each of the graves.

“The case is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code for trespassing on a burial place,” he said.

DSP Jame pointed out that the cemetery, situated amidst a forest, lacks guardians or protective fences.

In addition, the cemetery is isolated from the town, requiring a 30-minute boat ride to access as there is no road access to the location.

He urged the public not to create speculations about the incident and allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

Those with information related to the case are urged to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Tan Ah Phin at 013-5465743.
