12 MultiGP drone pilots to compete in challenge

KUCHING: A total of 12 selected MultiGP drone pilots will compete in the UITM Samarahan MultiGP Sarawak GEMFAN Challenge 2017 on 11 March, 2017.

The competition, organised by Class HM113A from Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, comprises two categories, namely, 5- inch propeller multi drone racing and 3-inch propeller drone racing. It will take place at the football field of UITM Kota Samarahan Campus 2 from 9.00am until 5.00pm.

According to Project Manager, Myra Jack, the competition is organised in conjunction with the students’ subject, HTT251 Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition. “Through this competition, we also aim to promote drone racing as a new type of technology advancement to the public and also promote drone racing as a healthy sport and hobby to the younger generation,” she said.

Myra added activities to keep the crowd entertained included drone racing, micro drone games, stimulator games, an exhibition and an event management talk co- hosted with the Sarawak Convention Bureau.

“The event management talk will be given by Mona Abdul Manap of Place Borneo and Jason Chew of Events Horizon,” she told a press conference at Penview Hotel here yesterday. Myra said food trucks and vendors would also be operating during the event. Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of MultiGP Chapter One Sarawak,Geoffrey Lee, who is also the Drone Racing Associat ion Malaysia founding member, said that MultiGP was an organisation similar to MotorGP and Formula One.

“But we don’t race cars or motorcycles, we race drones. “They might be small but they are very fast. In the world today, we have 350 chapters around the world, with about over 70,000 drone pilots,” he said.
