ARAU: Nearly 1,000 students representing 12 universities from Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand took part in the 20th IMT-GT (Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand – Growth Triangle) Varsity Carnival here from Friday until July 26.
Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail officiated the carnival themed “unity and mutual respect” at Dewan Semarak, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) on Saturday night. Local universities that participated are Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, UiTM and Universiti Malaysia Perlis while representing Indonesia are Universitas Negeri Medan, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Institut Teknologi Medan and Universitas Syiah Kuala.
Thailand is represented by Prince of Songkla University, Thaksin University, Walailak University and Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya. They competed in sports, including volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, petanque and woodball, being hosted by Perlis UiTM.
In his speech, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin wanted the spirit of unity being forged to continue flourishing after the carnival ended. “Competition through sports is healthy but sharing of views at seminar, arts and cultural performances can imbue tolerance among one another.
