KUCHING: A total of 1,257 individuals had to be evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS) after their homes here were inundated by floods today.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reported that the victims are from five areas – Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Desa Ria Jalan Desa Wira, Taman Malihah, Kampung Rantau Panjang and Taman Malihah/ Kampung Kolong.

In order to provide shelter for the victims, the Kampung Sinar Budi Baru’s PPS at R-Piang Kampung Sinar Budi Baru hall, and the village’s futsal court hosted 207 flood victims from 85 families.

The Stapok Community Hall was also open to 240 flood victims from 77 families for areas in Kampung Desa Ria Jalan Desa Wira, while Taman Malihah used its multi-purpose hall to provide shelter for 215 victims from 61 families.

In addition, in Kampung Rantau Panjang, the SJK (C ) Chung Hua Batu Kawa which opened later  at 1.35 pm is the temporary home to 136 victims from 25 families, Taman Malihah/Kampung Kolong’s SJK Chung Hua Sungai’s evacuation centre is home to 286 victims from 77 families bringing the total number of flood victims in Kuching to 1,084.
