KUCHING: 13 percent (129) of the police personnel including officers in the Sarawak contingent have been found to be obese.

According to the State Police Commissioner, Datuk Mazlan Mansor, obesity causes health problems and makes it difficult for the police personnel to perform their duties.

“It is our department policy to come out with this Trim and Fit Mega programme which is organised for groups or individuals.

“This is one of the ways for the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to determine the fitness level to ensure that we are fully fit to carry out our duties and responsibilities,” Mazlan told a press conference after attending the Trim and Fit Mega PDRM programme held in conjunction with the 210th Police Day celebration at the Kuching Waterfront yesterday.

Mazlan revealed that during a period of 10 years (2007-2017), 182 deaths were recorded in the Sarawak contingent due to various health problems such as heart complications and high blood pressure. He said such health issues caused the police personnel to have difficulties in performing their duties.

“Apart from that, work pressure is one of the elements that contribute to the health problems of our officers and that is why we create the stress management programme to help them,” Mazlan said.

He also pointed that any police personnel who did not reflect the PDRM image would not be promoted.

Meanwhile, commenting on the Watson Nyambek case, Mazlan said that the investigations had been completed and the results submitted to the Attorney General’s office.

“The case will come under section 504 of the Penal Code (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and I believe the Attorney General is evaluating all the evidences that we have collected and will make his decision in the near future,” he said.

Also present were the State Deputy Police Commissioner, SAC Dato Abdul Aziz Yusuf and State CID chief, SAC Dato Dev Kumar.
