SIBU: Two families were left homeless after their houses in Kampung Teku here were engulfed by an early morning fire today.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the 5.18 am incident as the 13 tenants managed to evacuate to safety.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Sungai Merah and Sibu stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.
Firefighters found both houses were beyond saving and the extinguishing deed was performed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.
The fire, which also destroyed a car, a van and three motorcycles, was brought under control an hour later at 6.11 am.
The firefighters ended their operation at 7.45 am.
Meanwhile in Kuching, an uninhabited house was destroyed in Kampung Bintawa Hulu, Jalan Kampung Pulo Hilir last night (Jan 30).
Firemen from Petra Jaya, Padungan and Tabuan Jaya stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 8.57 pm.
They found the wooden house was beyond salvage and the extinguishing deed was performed to control the flames from spreading.
The cause of both fires and the losses incurred are still under investigation.
