14 CVT students complete three-month programme

All participants of the UNIMAS Exposure Programme (UEP) at the closing ceremony organised by Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) at FACA Experimental Theatre, UNIMAS yesterday.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Closing Ceremony of the UNIMAS Exposure Programme (UEP) organised by Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) was held yesterday at FACA Experimental Theatre, UNIMAS. During this event, 14 participants received their certificate of completion after undergoing a threemonth Exposure Programme.

The certificates were given out by the Director of UNIMAS Global Associate Professor, Dr Abang Ekhsan bin Abang Othman and accompanied by the Dean of FLC, Professor. Dr. Ambigapathy Pandian.

The UNIMAS Exposure Programme is a customised shortterm course offered by FLC to international students. For its first cycle, the programme proudly welcomed 14 students from Chuzhou Vocational and Technical College (CVT), China.

In his opening speech, Prof Ambigapathy stressed that this programme manifests FLC’s commitment in propelling UNIMAS global visibility by capitalising on the faculty’s language niche, specifically English.

He went on to highlight UEP’s attractive programme structure which blends students’ language proficiency and academic needs with campus life and local culture experiences. During the programme, the Chuzhou students attended 20 hours of English language classes per week focusing on developing listening, speaking, reading, writing skills and language awareness.

In addition to the English Language lessons, the students also sat in selected courses (Cost and Management Accounting, Corporate Risk Management, and Business Communication) offered by Faculty of Economics and Business.

They also visited several places of interest including Sarawak Cultural Village, Jong Crocodile Farm, Matang Wildlife Centre, Chinese Histor ical Museum, Brooke Gallery, Wind Cave, Ferry Cave, Seniawan Night Market, and joined activities within and outside the campus such as kayaking, swimming and Halloween Fun Run@Green Heights Mall.

These visits and activities were in fact incorporated into their language learning modules. A group of 16 student Buddies consisting of UNIMAS undergraduate students from various faculties assisted with the outdoor activities in this programme. A closing ceremony will typically mark the end of a UNIMAS Exposure Programme cycle.

The Chuzhou UEP Closing Ceremony was enlivened by the intercultural modern and traditional performances by the participants themselves. The performances showcased the Chinese culture, highlighted the participants’ appreciation of the Malaysian culture as well as their improved English language proficiency.

Two of the Chuzhou student representatives, Ms. Liu Heqing and Ms. Zou Zihuan also delivered a heartfelt speech expressing their gratitude to Faculty of Language and Communication and UNIMAS, in particular their instructors and facilitators for the wonderful and meaningful experience.
