14 months in prison for attempting to steal motorcycle

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man to 14 months in prison on Thursday (Feb 17) for attempting to steal a motorcycle.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkai passed sentence on Oliver Ling, 45, after the charges were read to him by an interpreter.

He was charged under Section 379A and Section 511 of the Penal Code for trying to steal a motorcycle belonging to one Chee On Lah, 62.

Ling committed the offence at a flat in Jalan Batu Kawah here at around 2.30pm on Feb 13.

According to the case brief, Chee saw a man cutting the chain to his motorcycle, which was parked under the flat.

Chee and his son rushed downstairs and upon seeing them, Ling ran, pushing the motorcycle to the edge of a trench.

Chee’s son and his friends later managed to apprehend Ling before handing the suspect over to the police.
