MIRI: A total of 106 deaths were recorded from 91 road traffic crashes statewide in the first four months of this year.
This shows a 15 per cent increase from the same period in 2021, said state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
“Overall, the statistics are worrying,” he told a group of local media today at the state level road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration in Miri.
A total of 260 goodies in the forms of motorcycle helmets and safety triangle warning sign indicator reflector outdoor kits were distributed to road users during the launching of the state-level road safety campaign today.
Sarawak has witnessed an increase of 22 per cent in traffic fatalities cases from 78 to 100 cases, he added.
For those seriously injured, the number has increased from 60 people to 72 or 12 per cent.
“This figure is very much worrying,” Lee pointed out.
Because of this, the government will continue to conduct Ops Selamat for every festive season as part of its approach in instilling road safety awareness amongst road users, the Senadin assemblyman added.
On another note, Lee disclosed that the Sarawak Road Safety Council will reactivate the Traffic Game in stages in the state to teach and give young children awareness of and lessons on road safety.
