MIRI: Volunteers cleared 156.4 kilograms of trash from the Luak Esplanade Beach here today.
The beach clean-up organised by the Miri City Council involved various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Mayor Adam Yii who participated in the event, stressed the significance of such initiatives in promoting environmental awareness and addressing the detrimental effects of pollution on both human health and the environment.
“This beach cleaning initiative is not just a standalone event; it is a part of our larger green initiative, aimed at fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Miri,” said Yii.
“Our efforts here today contribute directly to achieving several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Together, we strive to align our actions with these global goals, ensuring that our beloved city progresses towards a sustainable future.”
He expressed his optimism in seeing various cultural associations participating in the event, noting that their involvement showcases the unity and diversity that define Miri’s vibrant community.
The City Council has planned additional cleanup activities for the third and fourth quarters of the year.
Councillor Leslie Lau, the event organising chairman, was also present, overseeing the operations and coordinating with the participating organisations.
