KUCHING: The AsiaFlux Conference 2022, to be held on Sept 20 to 22 at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI), will see the participation of 160 scientists from different fields of expertise from various parts of the world.
The respective scientists will be presenting their topics either through oral presentations or posters.
In total, more than 250 delegates are expected to attend throughout the conference.
There will be a total of 12 keynote speakers for the conference, namely, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Saleh; Hokkaido University emeritus professor Dr Ryusuke Hatano; University of Illinois Chicago Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences assistant prof Dr Gavin McNicol; Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences, UT, Estonia Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology prof Dr Ulo Mander; University of Wisconsin Department of Biological Systems Engineering associate prof Dr Paul Stoy; Lab Ecological and Environmental Physics at the Research Faculty of Agriculture, and Hokkaido University prof Dr Takashi Hirano.
Besides that, the keynote speakers include University of Waterloo Department of Geography and Environmental Management and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Ecosystems and Climate prof Dr Maria Strack; Climatology at the Department of Earth Sciences and Environment, Faculty of Science and Technology, National University of Malaysia prof Dr Fredolin Tangang; Future Earth Programme director at the Seoul National University Asia Centre (SNUAC) prof Dr Joon Kim; University of Hong Kong (HKU) School of Biological Sciences assistant prof Dr Jin Wu; National Institute for Environmental Studies Earth System Division, Japan senior researcher Dr Ryuichi Hirata; and Bioclimatology at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, University of Göttingen, Germany prof Dr Alexander Knohl.
An ice-breaking session at TROPI will be held for delegates tomorrow, and the Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, is expected to attend.
Meanwhile, a Peat Gala Nite will also be held on Sept 20 and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to attend at TROPI, at 7.30pm.
The gala night is expected to draw more than 500 delegates.
The AsiaFlux Conference 2022 is jointly organised by TROPI, Malaysian Peat Society (MPS), and the AsiaFlux Science Steering Committee, in collaboration with the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan; Hokkaido University, Japan; Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB); Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM); and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).
The conference is also supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau.
