KUCHING: Of the 209 members of the public who turned up yesterday for the blood donation campaign at CityONE Mega Mall, 165 were successful in giving their blood.

The campaign was organised by one of the youth groups of the Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division Chinese Associaitons Youth Section Sarawak (Federation Youth) namely Sarawak Hakka Community Association, Youth Section (Hakka Youth) with the assistance of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (Kuching Chapter) and Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank.

The Sarawak Hakka Association Youth Section welfare officer Chong Teck Miaw said: “This activity is designed to ensure that the blood bank of the Sarawak Central Hospital has enough fresh blood for future emergency use.”

Chong also thanked the sponsors for their generous support. The sponsors are Lee Onn Group of Companies, Yung Kong Group, See Hua Marketing Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Kion Hoong Cooking Oil Mills Sdn Bhd, Supreme Food Supply (M) Sdn Bhd, Taiwan Siau Jou, Vill Ice Cream, Anergy Water Sdn Bhd, Choon Hua Trading Co and Vinda Deluxe.

Yap donated 400ml blood in the campaign.

Sarawak Energy Bhd’s power station manager Yap Cho Sen, 48, has been looking forward to this campaign.

“I failed twice to participate in blood donations in the past because I have high blood pressure. This is the first time I qualify as a donor,” he said.

“I am thankful that I am able to donate my blood today. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. I hope the organiser will achieve their goals prior to this campaign,” he added.

Yap donated 400ml of his blood to the campaign. He learned about the event from his children who were members of the Malaysian Red Crescent. He came with his wife who also participated in the blood donation.

Salmiah is glad to donate her blood.

Meanwhile, Siburan Watsons’ assistant supervisor Salmiah Masnu came with her sister-in-law and the latter’s son to participate in the programme.

She said, “This is my fourth time since 2016. I feel satisfied that I have done my part in donating my blood to those who are in need.”

Every person is qualified as a donor as long as he/she is healthy, has no health problems, aged 18 and above, weighs 45kg and above and has minimum 5 hours of sleep.
