KUCHING: A total of 167 new members graduated from the General Operations Force (GOF) Basic Training Course Series 1/2024 in a ceremony held on Tuesday (Oct 8) at the PGA Rappelling Ground, Pulapol Kuching.

The event was officiated by Supt Ernest John, deputy commander (training), Pulapol Kuching, who stressed the GOF’s crucial role in maintaining national security.

“The intensive three-month training, which commenced on July 15, aimed to equip officers and personnel with essential tactical and operational skills. The primary objective is to ensure that our officers are well-versed in warfare tactics, civil operations, and crime prevention techniques.

“The course focused on fire control, combat strategies, and jungle warfare, ensuring that participants are agile and prepared for diverse operational scenarios,” he said.

He noted GOF’s significance, particularly during times of crisis, citing the force’s deployment during key national security incidents such as the 2013 Lahad Datu standoff.

“While the PGA’s role may seem dormant in peacetime, these troops are always ready to be deployed swiftly, unlike regular army units which may require more preparation time,” he added.

He also urged the graduates to take pride in their service, addressing internal scepticism about the relevance of the GOF. “The PGA is a multi-tasking force, capable of rapid deployment and execution in both conflict and peacetime. Your training here prepares you for the responsibilities ahead,” he said.

At the end of the session, he noted, the participants will be able to take responsibility as officers and police officers who are agile and effective in the tasks and scenarios faced by the GOF.
