17 held for illegal online gambling

KUCHING: A total of 17 people were arrested for illegal online gambling in a seven-day operation codenamed ‘Ops Dadu’.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the operation, carried out by the D7 branch of the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Kuching district police headquarters, was held from April 1 to 7.

Five raids were carried out in locations under the jurisdiction of the Gita police station.

“Eleven locals and six foreigners were arrested for engaging on illegal online gambling activities.

“Also seized were cash amounting to RM188, 31 mobile phones and nine sets of computers as well as IDs and passwords,” he disclosed.

ACP Ahsmon said all of the suspects would be investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 and a prison term of up to three years, if convicted.
