SIBU: Police arrested 17 people for engaging in a cockfighting session in the Bukit Penyau area last Sunday (Feb 27).
Acting Sibu OCPD Supt Collin Babat, in a press conference on today, said the raid was carried out at 3pm after a public tip-off.
He revealed that an open space at Jalan Bukit Penyau had been used to conduct the illegal activity.
“Upon realising the presence of the law, the individuals attempted to flee but they failed and were apprehended.”
Also seized were four live cockerels, two dead ones, three spurs and an electronic scale, added Supt Collin.
The suspects, aged between 19 and 75, were detained under Section 3 (1) of the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals Measures 1962.
Supt Collin pointed out that the suspects were not issued with summons.
“They are also not remanded due to health and age factors as some are disabled and have heart disease.
“Their statements were recorded and they were released on police bail pending investigation.”
