KUCHING: About 170 Primary Six pupils from SK Gersik and SK Matu Baru here attended the tuition classes for UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah), also known as Primary School Achievement Test in English.

Pantai Damai State Assemblyman, Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi yesterday graced the closing ceremony of the tuition classes called “Tuisyen Rakyat @ KKLW (Ministry of Rural and Regional Development) – “Tuisyen UPSR 2017” held at Yayasan Sarawak, Jalan Sultan Tengah here.

In his speech, Rahman stressed the need for parents and teachers to work together to tackle disciplinary issues in schools.

Asked to comment complaints by parents that the teachers had punished their children harshly, he said: “There are a few isolated cases where the punishment given out by the teachers is too harsh.

“But generally, schools take actions because it is their responsibility to help make things right for the students,” he said.

Rahman, who is also the Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity, hoped these isolated cases would not stop teachers from disciplining their students.

“If a school finds out that some students have broken the rules, then punish them appropriately and within reason,” he said.

Rahman added that each school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) played an important role in enhancing ties between teachers and parents.

“To parents, I urge you to get to know your children’s teachers and communicate with them so that if the children show negative traits, then the problem can be solved together.

“I urge the PTAs to hold more activities which include parents so both sides can get to know each other.”
