170 tons of e-waste collected in campaign

KUCHING: About 170.5 tons of electrical and electronic waste has been collected so far this year in a government effort to combat climate change.

The Electrical and Electronic Waste (BEE) Collection Campaign here was launched on April 23 by Kuching South City Council Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng in conjunction with the Earth Day celebration.

It is being carried out throughout in several locations throughout Sarawak with the involvement of the local community and cooperation of the local authorities.

The Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) quoted Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni as saying that the campaign was one way to overcome unplanned disposal of such waste.

“Electrical and electronic waste is very dangerous if it is not disposed in the right way.

“Therefore, the companies involved in this programme also pay those who bring their electronic waste materials to the collection campaign,” he said during the BEE 2022 Collection Campaign at the Mydin Carpark in Bandar Baru Samariang here, recently.

“We have done a total of 21 programmes throughout Sarawak with five more programmes left for this year and it will be continue in the future,” he said.

The programme is jointly organised by the state Department of Environment (DOE) and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) in collaboration with North Kuching City Commission (DBKU), Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR), the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Bintulu Development Board (BDA).
