KUCHING: A total of 170,475 tonnes of solid waste from the Kuching area was disposed of at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park in Mambong near here last year.

On a daily basis, about 2,522 tonnes of household waste are collected every day throughout Kuching City.

Local Government and Housing Ministry permanent secretary Bakrie Zaini said the disposal of solid waste of Kuching residents at the level 4 sanitary landfill involved the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), South Kuching  City Council (MBKS) and Padawan  Municipal Council (MPP).

“The ministry is very committed to encouraging every local authority (PBT) to carry out activities related to the reduction of solid waste.

“The level 4 sanitary landfill is the best category because it is equipped with leachate treatment plant as well as incinerator, and will clearly have minimal impact on the environment,” he said at the launch of the school-level recycling competition in Kuching City and Kota Samarahan here yesterday.

With Sarawak’s total population at 2.8 million, he said the current waste disposal was about 0.75 and 0.14 kg per capita per day. – Bernama
