KUCHING: Two blocks of workers’ quarters along Jalan Kong Pin, Batu Kawa here were destroyed by fire last night.
The first block consisted of 11 doors, while the second block had 16 doors.
However, only 10 doors were occupied by 19 victims.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya stations were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 7.40 pm.
By the time the firefighters arrived the fire had razed the blocks.
The firemen wrapped up their operation at 10.15 pm.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are under investigation.
The 19 victims from six families are being sheltered at the Dewan Masyarakat Stapok temporary relief centres.
