KUCHING: The three-day State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting commenced at 9.15am today with elected representatives from across the state converging on the DUN complex here.
The siting began with a prayer at 9.17am in the DUN chambers.
It was followed by the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s speech read by DUN secretary Pele Peter Tinggom at 9.19am.
“Under Article 21 (1) of the Sarawak Constitution, the Head of State can call for the DUN sitting from time to time.
“Hence, I as the Head of State exercising the powers conferred on me as aforesaid, is hereby calling the DUN to sit on Feb 14,” he said.
The sitting today will see all 82 elected assemblypersons sworn in as members of the august House.
Eighteen of them will be sworn in for the first time and among them are Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing; Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki; Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan; Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim; Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan; Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada; Pelawan assemblyman Michael Tiang; Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai; and Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor.
In the 12th State Election, the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition returned as the state government after having secured a landslide victory, winning 76 out of 82 seats.
The opposition only managed to secure six seats – Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) winning four seats and Democratic Action Party (DAP) with two seats.
