LAMBIR: Malaysia is set to reduce the mishap fatalities rate to 2.2 people for every 10,000 registered vehicles nationwide by the year of 2020.
Secretary General for Transport Ministry, Dato Seri Saripudin Kassim said, in 2016 it was recorded there was a total of 18 million registered vehicles with 2.7 fatalities for every 10,000 registered vehicles.
He said further, this year the government is set to reduce it into a rate of 2.5 mishap fatalities.
“Currently, Malaysia is in the third place after Thailand (first) and Myanmar (second) in terms of the highest mishap fatalities recorded,” he said and adding that some overseas countries target zero road mishap fatalities every year.
Meanwhile, in 2016, Malaysia recorded a total of 7157 road fatalities.
“For the first six months of this year, Sarawak recorded a total of 3360 road fatalities which is quite alarming,” he said when officiating at Road Safety Campaign organised by Transport Ministry in collaboration with Darul Hana Mosque committee members held at the mosque, here yesterday.
Among the highlights of the programme were safety talk, safety exhibition and contribution presentation from PUSPANITA.
A total of 13 needy individuals received contributiona from PUSPANITA handed over by its president, Datin Sri Naemah, Ayub.
