LUNDU: A total of 20 Chinese associations in Lundu and Sematan have joined hands to successfully organise the 2023 Lantern Festival held at the Lundu Townsquare over the recent weekend.
Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan said the purpose of the festival is to preserve and promote Chinese customs and culture.
“Such a festival aims to ensure that the cultural heritage and traditions can be inherited and passed on to the younger and future generations.
“Thus, this event is an example of local community cooperation aimed at preserving traditions and culture, promoting cultural diversity and further uniting the Chinese community in preserving their cultural heritage,” he said when officiating at the opening of the festival here recently.
Azizul then said the Sarawak Government has always been committed to developing facilities for the Chinese community.
“Therefore, the Sarawak government through the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) has contributed a fund of RM150,000 to the Lundu Buddhist Society for the maintenance of a house of worship in the area,” he said.
Meanwhile, the event also witnessed the lantern lighting ceremony including traditional dance performances, flute music performances from SJK Chung Hua Sematan and song performances by SJK Chung Hua Lundu.
