KUCHING: The Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications (MUTS), through Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), will construct Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Stations in Miri and Bintulu under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.

MUTS Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has been tasked with enhancing the electricity supply in Miri and Bintulu following the development of CCGT in Miri and Samalaju, Bintulu, managed by Petros.

“It is expected that the CCGT in Miri will generate up to 500 megawatts of electricity, while in Samalaju, Bintulu, the generated electricity will amount to 1,500 megawatts.

“With this development, Sarawak is set to benefit from an increase of 2,000 megawatts in electricity supply, a significant portion of which will come from gas.

“Gas, as a blue energy source, is expected to contribute to the enhancement of stability and reliability in the electricity supply in Miri and Bintulu,” he said.

He disclosed this when met by reporters after the Hari Raya Open House hosted by MUTS at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today (Apr 21).

Julaihi clarified that Petros also has the responsibility to further improve and build networks across Sarawak under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.

“This means Petros’ role is greater than it is currently; Petros will be fully involved in procurement, distribution, repairing compressors not only for domestic use but also for investor needs and power generation,” he said.

When asked about Petros’ revenue since becoming Sarawak’s single gas aggregator, he said Petros’ appointment as the Gas Aggregator under the Gas Distribution (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 effective Feb 1, 2024 is the first step.

“This is just the beginning after appointing Petros, so we will wait for the results.

“Any outcome will be announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he added.

Also present were MUTS deputy minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
