KUCHING: Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar said in an effort to curb illegal gambling during this election, several teams from CID HQs have been deployed in certain districts which are prone to illegal gambling activities.
Among the districts are Miri, Sibu, Bintulu and Sarikei. He said at 3.30 pm last Tuesday, a police team from CID HQs led by ASP Rudy Garit conducted a raid at a makeshift cockfighting pit located at a vegetable farm in Sarikei.
The cockfighting pit was about 15 minutes drive from Jalan Kwong Min-Minah, Sarikei. When the police team comprising 10 men reached the area, they noticed a group of about 50 to 60 men under a zinc covered pit engaging in a cockfighting activity. As soon as the team zeroed in on the group, they ran helter-skelter into the jungle.
The police team managed to give chase and succeeded in arresting 22 men, all of them locals, aged between 30 and 79 years. Four live and two dead cockerels and various gambling paraphernalia related to cockfighting activity were seized. The case is investigated under section 3 (1) of the Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Ordinance 1962.
