KUCHING: The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) has attracted a total 22 projects with a total investment of RM33.64 billion in different industries.
This includes investment in the aluminum, ferroalloys and polycrystalline silicon at the Samalaju Industrial Zone. This is excluding projects such as the Steel Factory (worth RM12.87 billion) and the Methanol Factory (worth RM8.58 billion).
“SCORE now is in its second phase that is between the period of the year 2016 to 2020. SCORE is one of the state’s major strategies to become a high income and advanced state in Malaysia by 2030,”
Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan pointed this out in his speech during the 25th Kuching Polytechnic Convocation Ceremony held yesterday.
Tengah then said that currently the Sama Jaya Free Industrial now has a total workforce of 10,027 and 99.9 per cent are locals while the remainder percentage comprised foreigners.
RM9.2 billion was invested for Sama Jaya with approximately 400 hectares that have been developed. The project has also exported a total of RM2 billion annually and also an annual income of RM250 million.
“One of the ways forward for our state to further prosper is industrialisation and to do so, we need large number of professionals, semi-professionals and skilled workforce that could be engaged by the labour market and spur our economic and industrial development.
“Hence, our youths in particular must be well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the industries set up by the state.
“That is why the state government is actively promoting the Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to answer the call for such workforce,” said Tengah.
Also speaking was the Director of Kuching Polytechnic who said that a total of 1,419 Diploma students graduated during the ceremony.
These include graduates from programmes such as Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology and Communication Department, Petrochemical Engineering and Trade Department.
As of the convocation ceremony, 24,473 students have graduated from the institution since 1993.
