22 to contest for 16 supreme council posts

KUCHING: The upcoming Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) triennial general meeting (TGM) or PBB Convention on June 16 to 19 will see 22 members contesting for the 16 Supreme Council posts of its Bumiputera wing.

PBB Election officer Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah said they have received 23 nominations from all 82 PBB branches as of Friday which was the deadline to submit nominations, but one has withdrawn.

“With that, 22 (members) will be contesting,” he told a press conference following a meeting chaired by PBB deputy president Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the PBB headquarters here today.

As for the 14 Supreme Council posts for Pesaka wing, Awang Bemee announced that there were 24 nominations but 10 have withdrawn and as such, those nominated have won uncontested.

Meanwhile, Uggah who chaired the press conference said 16 committees have been formed to oversee and ensure the smooth running of the PBB TGM that is expected to see some 2,420 members converge at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

The Women and Youth are expected to hold their meetings on June 17 while the main committee on June 18 and 19.

“All preparations are running smoothly including nominations for a few positions as it is time for the party to hold elections for posts within the MKT (Supreme Working Council), main committee, Youth and Women.

“Themed ‘Guaranteeing the stability, prosperity and glory of Sarawak, this is very important considering the latest development in terms of the achievements of GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) in the last election where we won 76 out of 82 seats that has enabled us to continue to maintain the stability in Sarawak,” he said.

With stability and strong unity of the people, Uggah who is also Deputy Premier, said Sarawak can continue to pursue its rights and steer Sarawak to become a region with high income by 2030 under Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy.
