BINTULU: The Pan Borneo Highway will have a total of 225 P-turns instead of conventional U-turns to ensure safer roads for all commuters.
Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this would allow road users to perform safer U-turns in view of vehicles being driven faster on highways.
“Typically when performing conventional U-turns, road users will merge into the fast lane on the opposite side which can be dangerous to other drivers driving at high speed on the right lane.
“However, a P-turn will only require drivers to cross to the other side of the road and merge into the left lane,” he explained during a press conference today.
He added that his ministry sought to educate road users on the proper use of a P-turn to avoid confusion.
“This method has been widely used in the Peninsular and we want the people here to understand how to properly do a P-turn,” he said.
Alluding to other questions from reporters, Fadillah confirmed that there had been cases of vandalism from outside parties along the Pan Borneo Highway, causing danger to other road users.
However, he remained tight-lipped on who the perpetrators were.
“Along the highway, we can see that some of the guard rails have been tampered with.
“This may be caused by those looking to steal these things. Also, some guard rails were removed to set easier routes for the locals to commute,” he revealed.
Fadillah said reports on the matter had been lodged with relevant authorities and investigations were ongoing.
“Based on previous experiences, it is a tough ordeal to catch them in the act as they are well aware of their surroundings and are only doing it when no one is around.
“We advise the people to refrain from doing this as these are public assets that are constructed for the comfort and safety of all road users,” he added.
