SIBU: A total of 23 community leaders within the Bawang Assan constituency received their certificates of appointment during a presentation ceremony held at the Sibu Resident office yesterday. Out of the 23 community leaders, 15 were re-appointed as longhouse chiefs, 1 was re-appointed as ‘penghulu’, 6 were re-appointed as ‘Kapitan’, and one was a newly-appointed ‘Kapitan’. When newly-appointed Kapitan, Wong Mee Leng, was met by New Sarawak Tribune, she said that she very happy with her appointment and that she will try her best to serve the community.
“I will try my best to serve the community and help them solve the problems that they are facing,” she said. Meanwhile, Sibu Resident, Charles Siaw, who spoke at the function called on the community leaders to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to provide efficient service to the community, in line with the current technology. He said community leaders must emphasise on good networking with all government agencies to ensure that the government’s policies and programmes would be implemented efficiently.
“As community leaders, all of you should be open minded and willing to share your experiences with colleagues. “You must also work as a team and be professional, sincere, and honest,” he explained.
Therefore, he hoped that community leaders will give their best and be in line with the government’s slogan which is ‘An Honour To Serve’. Among those present were Temenggong Stanley Geramong, Pemanca James Semilan, and Penghulu Richard Ampi.
