KUCHING: The Public Works Department (PWD) has constructed 24 p-turns along the Pan Borneo Highway from Moyan to Sematan reduce the number of road accidents on the highway.
Its deputy director Cassidy Morris said that the p-turns will be located every five kilometres along the 90-kilometre stretch of the road.
Cassidy emphasised the importance of drivers being aware of the p-turns and adhering to the 90 km/h speed limit. In a statement to reporters after officiating the Road Safety Campaign at Moyan Square junction, Jalan Batu Kawa-Bau, he said, “P-turns may seem new to plenty of road users driving up and down the Pan Borneo Highway. Therefore, I urge everyone to be aware of the p-turns ahead when driving.”
He also expressed concern over the number of illegal u-turns made by road users and suggested the need for p-turn signs to be installed 300 metres before the p-turns.
“There will be p-turn signs installed 300 metres before the p-turn to inform drivers regarding the p-turns, which will be located at the opposite lane for drivers to make the turn,” Cassidy said.
Cassidy also suggested the possibility of having rest and service areas (RSA) along the Pan Borneo Highway to allow road users to rest when driving long hours. He said, “Most road users drive extremely fast and make sudden brakes when there’s something in front of them, which can cause road accidents.”
PWD Sarawak, contractor SaraWorks, and the police worked together on a road safety campaign. They gave out 300 sets of goody bags and brochures to promote road safety to all road users.
The director of SaraWorks Chung Kui Siang, PWD chief deputy director for quality management Sim Hui Kheng, and IPD Bau traffic chief Inspector Mahatir Samah were also present at the event.
