KAPIT: A total of 256 students are participating in the two-day state- level MSS Sarawak Chess Competition being held at SMK Kapit 2 until 5 July.
Officiating at the opening ceremony yesterday was an officer from the State Education Department, Rosli Arshad.
The participating divisions are Kuching, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
It seems that the game of chess is getting popular among students as seen by the increase of 50 participants this year compared with last year.
The annual competition also involved 63 people comprising the respective Division’s team manager, officials and coaches.
The chess competition is divided into three categories namely, 12 years old and below, 15 years old and below and 18 years old and below. Kuching has 28 participants while the host Kapit has 36, Sarikei (36), Miri (34), Sibu (33), Sri Aman (15), Betong (12), Mukah (36) and Bintulu (26).
The competition is aimed at selecting the state participants to the national level competition scheduled to be held in August.
Also present at the opening ceremony was the competition director, Sim Wooi Siang of SMK Kapit.
