KUCHING: The third edition of the Miss Bengoh Culture 2017 has seen entries by 26 women, with more expected to submit their entries before the closing date at noon on Friday.
According to the competition’s assistant coordinator Alvine Ling, the preliminary round of the competition will be held on 15 July at 2pm at Awah Café of Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Headquarters at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here.
“Members of the public are encouraged to attend the competition and support their favourite contestants,” said Ling.
She said only 10 contestants will be selected during the preliminary round to compete in the final to be held on 22 July conjunction with the Bengoh Cultural Carnival (BCC) at Bengoh Resettlement Scheme (BRS), Jalan Semadang-Bau, Off Jalan Puncak Borneo.
She also said that the champion and the first runner-up will automatically qualify for the final of Miss Tagang Semadang 2017 to be held on 29 July.
“Entries to Miss Tagang Semadang are on invitation, whereby only the champions from other beauty pageants competitions are invited to the competition which offers cash prizes, scholarship from UCSI University, free stay for two at UCSI Hotel Kuching to the top three winners,” she said.
The beauty pageant offers cash prize of RM1,500 and a trophy to the champion, while first and second runner-up winners will each receive RM1,000 and RM500 plus trophies.
Meanwhile, BCC organising chairman Rangen Jamang said besides the beauty pageant (Miss Bengoh Culture) competition, other activities lined up for the three-day carnival are gong beating and traditional dance competition, blowpipe competition, and karaoke competition
He said a Malaysian Army exhibition will also be held during the carnival where the Army will showcase weapons and hand-to-hand combat techniques, survival tactics, as well as provided health and dental screening.
“For this year’s event, we have constructed a traditional Bidayuh Gawai house to display the Bidayuh culture and heritage, which we expect will be the main crowd puller during the three-day carnival,” said Rangen.
