KUCHING: Police operation against illegal gambling in the state continued last week as their Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel gave illegal operators and their clients a hard time.

Sarawak CID head, SAC Dato Dev Kumar informed that from March 19 to March 25, they had successfully conducted a total of 30 gambling raids, resulting in the arrest of 40 individuals.

The types of illegal gambling targeted in the operation were (1) Illegal 4d; (2) cyber gambling; (3) gambling in a public place.

The focus was mainly on illegal 4d, whereby 26 raids were conducted. There were three raids on cyber gambling while gambling in a public place saw only one raid.

Dev added the police had tried their best to eradicate online gambling with raids conducted at 24-hour convenience stores offering reload services to online gamblers.

Three online gambling raids were conducted in Kuching and Sri Aman, resulting in the arrest of 11 service providers and seizure of 10 mobile phones and cash amounting to RM4,553.

Meanwhile, 26 raids were conducted on counters selling illegal 4d in 13 districts.

The most number of raids conducted were in Miri (6), Sibu (5) and Kuching (4), resulting in the arrests of 27 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM3,439.

Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery were also seized.

Of the 40 individuals arrested, 30 were males while the rest, females. They were aged between 17 and 74 years old, with four foreigners among those arrested.

All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act.
