MIRI: Twenty-eight persons have received awards for outstanding service to this city.
The presentation of the awards was made during the fourth edition of the Miri Mayor’s Award 2021-2022 ceremony on Monday night.
Former Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water (2009 to 2013), Tan Sri Dato Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, 77, was awarded the Grand Mayor Special Award.
Chin was a councillor of the then Miri Municipal Council since 1980. In 1984, he was chairman of the Municipal Council.
Two years later, he contested the Parliamentary election for the Lambir constituency and won. He was a Member of Parliament for Miri from 1986-2013.
Following his appointment as Parliament Secretary to the Ministry of Welfare Services, he resigned as chairman of the Miri Municipal Council in March 1987. In total, he had served the council for over 33 years.
Miri City Council mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang in his opening speech said that the city council will continue to identify individuals and organisations who have contributed to Miri City.
“The list of recipients will continue to increase correspondingly to the continuous growth of Miri City,” he said.
Meanwhile, in the Mayor’s Special Award for community leaders, the recipients were Penghulu Fong Siew Ming, Pemanca Abang Mohamad Dato Sri Abang Othman and Pemanca Alexander Isut Karin.
Miri Smart City facilitator, Cr Peter Chia Chau Kiong received the award for the corporate category, while Riaplus Sdn Bhd for the Industrial Safety practices.
Dr Mohamed Tarek Seddik Abdellatif has presented the award in the Healthcare category.
Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief DSP Loh Wooi Kee and Sargeant detective Rasli Linang received the safety and security awards.
There were five recipients of the environment award – Seh Hing Recycle Sdn Bhd, Richard Lejau, Eye I Recycle (Miri) Sdn Bhd, Mathew Benson Mounsey and Zainudin Ibrahim.
The recipients of the youth, culture, arts, sports promotion and talent culture awards were Zainal Abidin Suhaili, Azri Asmat Sefri, Malcolm Ting Siong Hung, Hezekiah Asim and Datuk James Ling Liu Kiong.
Recipients for welfare awards were Richard Wong Joon Siong, Dr Loh Yunn Hua and Peryatim Miri.
For education awards, the recipients were Dato’ Sri Law Kiu Kiong, Sekolah Kebangsaan Senadin and SMK Merbau.
Borneo Foodie, Fun Borneo Sdn Bhd (Coco Cabana) and Chang Yi were the recipients of the tourism promotion awards.
Present at the presentation ceremony were Minister for Transport Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, Mayor of La Trinidad Municipality Romeo Kimo Salda and his delegation.
