KUCHING: Sarawak recorded an improvement for the 2017 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) compared to the previous year in terms of its State Average Grade (GPN).
Director of State Education Department, Rakayah Madon said that the state recorded a GPN of 5.17 last year compared to 5.34 GPN in 2016.
“This means that the achievement of SPM candidates in 2017 has increased by 0.17 measured by GPN,” she explained while announcing the results of 2017 SPM at the State Education Department, Jalan Diplomatik here yesterday.
She added that a total of 28,108 or 83.21 per cent out of 33,778 students who sat for the examination was qualified to obtain SPM certificates for fulfilling the requirement of at least a pass in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah.
“Out of 59 subjects taken by the state’s school candidates, 57 subjects (96.61 per cent) achieved the passing percentages of more than 80 per cent.
“And from the 57 subjects, 24 subjects (40.68 per cent) recorded 100 per cent pass, 25 subjects (42.37 per cent) recorded 90 to 99.9 per cent pass while 8 subjects (13.56 per cent) recorded 80 to 89.9 per cent pass,” said Rakayah.
Meanwhile, according to the School Average Grade (GPS), she revealed that 22 schools in the state achieved outstanding results for obtaining a GPS of 4.00 and below.
“The 22 schools are SM Sains Kuching Utara, Padawan (2.12), SM Sains Miri (2.17), Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah (2.49), SMK St. Elizabeth, Sibu (2.66), SM Sains Kuching, Padawan (2.67), SMK Methodist, Sibu (2.84), Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, Miri (2.89), SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu (2.98), SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Kuching (3.17), SMK St. Anthony, Sarikei (3.33), SMK Tinggi, Sarikei (3.58), SMK Lutong, Miri (3.63), SMK Kubong, Limbang (3.68), SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abd Wahab, Padawan (3.75), SMK Sungai Merah, Sibu (3.77), SMK Bandar Sibu (3.80), SMK Tung Hua, Sibu (3.89), SMK Agama Miri (3.89), SMK Kwong Hua Middle, Sibu (3.91), SMK Batu Lintang (3.94), SMK Tinggi Kuching (3.97) and Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak (4.00),” she added.
When met by reporters after the announcement, Rakayah said that the state ranking for 2017 SPM has yet to be released but she believed that the ranking has improved.
She added that with 80 per cent of the students who qualified for SPM certificates, it has shown that the students have been well-guided and everyone could further their studies at higher learning institutions.
“Candidates who want to correct their personal information on the results slip, revise or update their result should do so within 30 days after the date of result announcement or by April 15, 2018,” said the Director of State Education Department.
