KUCHING: The police detained three men in Jalan Tabuan here last night on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Kuching district acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said that the suspects, aged 36, 51, and 58 years, were found to have alcohol content exceeding the permissible limit when they were tested using an Evidential Breath Analyser (EBA).

They could be charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of not less than RM10,000 and not more than RM30,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years upon conviction.

A total of 41 summonses were issued for various traffic offences during the operation codenamed “Ops Mabuk,” which began at around 10.30pm.

Merbin added that 111 vehicles and 125 people were examined throughout the operation.

In the meantime, he reminded the public to adhere to traffic laws and refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol for the sake of everyone’s safety.
