LAWAS: An integrated operation conducted here on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of three foreigners found to be staying in the state without valid documentations.
According to the Sarawak Immigration Department, the collaborative effort involved personnel from the Lawas Immigration Enforcement Unit, Ministry of Health (MOH), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), Limbang Resident Office, Lawas District Office, and local authorities.
Although initially focused on rescuing homeless individuals in town, the operation took a turn when a meticulous examination of 10 individuals led to the discovery of three foreigners at an abandoned house and a sports court, committing immigration-related offences.
These individuals are currently being investigated under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Lawas, a seemingly unassuming town with a population exceeding 46,000, often flies under the public radar and is regarded as a routine pitstop.
Situated between Sabah and the Temburong district of Brunei, Lawas town plays a crucial role as a pivotal halt for travellers from Sabah and Brunei, making it an indispensable hub for individuals, including foreigners seeking employment opportunities.
The department reiterated its commitment to vigilantly monitor the presence of foreigners in Sarawak.
This initiative aligns with the overarching directive from the Malaysia Immigration Department director-general, emphasising the imperative to address the issue of foreigners working without valid passports in Malaysia.
