MUKAH: Two crew members were reported missing while three others survived following a shipwreck at Kampung Bungan Kecil, Batang Igan today.

According to a report from Sungai Merah police at 4.20am, they received a report from a passerby stating that a sand cargo ship named ‘Yu Lee’ had capsized off Batang Igan.

Firemen from Mukah station were promptly despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call around 6.05am.

During the incident, the caller managed to rescue two local crew members in their 40s and 50s, and believed there were still two crew members inside (the ship).

The missing victims are a local and an Indonesian, who are in their 20s.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been initiated to locate the missing crew, with search radius covering about 200 feet around the location of the shipwreck.

At around 1.30pm, Mukah fire station spokesperson added that rescuers were informed by villagers that a man in his 50s (another crew member), had been discovered safe and was believed to have managed to swim to safety.

The victim is said to have drifted 300m downstream of Sungai Kut before being able to swim ashore.

The search operation is intensified to locate the two missing victims.
