KAPIT : About 30 boys aged between seven and ten were circumcised at Kapit Polyclinic at Jalan Bleteh here on Sunday.
The mass circumcision event was jointly organised by the Kapit Health Clinic Advisory Panel, Kapit Hospital, Kapit Health Clinic, Union of Medical Assistants Sarawak, Song Health Clinic, Belaga Health Clinic, Nanga Ibau Rural Clinic and Sungai Tunoh Rural Clinic in collaboration with local non-governmental organisations, Lembaga Amanah Khairat Kapit and ADK System. Kapi t Heal th Of f icer, Dr Hamidi Mohd Sharkawi launched the event.
Also present were Dr Valerie Kimberley, Dr Alicia Lya Munan, Dr William Chung, Dr Emily Tan, chairman of Lembaga Amanah Khairat Kapit, Pemanca Haji Wasl Nor, Fire and Rescue Officer, Irwandy Tugor and JASA Officer, Mohd Matan Yok. The Director of Kapit Health Clinic and organising chairman, Dr Jusoh Aweng Senik explained that circumcision was a “healthy practice”.
When contacted,General Surgeon, Dr Pui Wei Chieng explained that the event provided an opportunity for the Medical Officers and Medical Assistants to acquire hands on skills in circumcision under the close supervision of a surgeon. He added that because of the overwhelming response, the mass circumcision would be an annual activity at Kapit Hospital.
He pointed out that a circumcision performed at a private clinic could cost between RM200 and RM300. It is learnt that more than 200 boys and men registered for the mass circumcision at the Surgical Theatre of Kapit Hospital from November 27 to December 8.
