KAPIT: Thirty Singaporeans who are graduates of Nanyang University of Singapore visited Kapit recently.
Leading the visitors were President of Sarawak Nanyang University Alumni Association Ling Chung Kok from Kuching and the secretary of Sarawak Independent Chinese School Federation Kong Chong Men from Sibu.
According to one of the visitors, Ong Moo Seng an accountant from Singapore, they were students at Nanyang University Singapore from 1965 to 1968.
They were the year-mate of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.
“For this trip, it involved over 100 Singaporeans. We were invited by Datuk Tiong Thai King. This time we came for a concert at RH Hotel to raise funds for Sarawak Independent School Education Fund. Our target was RM500,000. However due to an overwhelming response from sponsors we raised more than RM500,000” said Ong.
“From Sibu, after the concert, we broke into three groups. We took the opportunity to travel around to have a good look at Sarawak.
“One group went to Miri to visit the famous Niah Cave and Mulu Cave, another group of
more than 30 of us decided to travel by express boat up river to Kapit”, he said.
While here, the group visited Fort Sylvia to learn of Kapit history, the legacy of the late Iban paramount chief Tun Jugah Barieng, the collection of Ming Dynasty porcelain and the 1924 Great Peace Making Ceremony.
