KUCHING: Sarawak is on track to achieve its target of 30 percent women representation in the workforce and in decision-making roles in the government and corporate sectors by 2025. Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg however, said that the percentage was not an issue and urged women to strive to perform their very best to produce result and outcome, hence proving their credentials.
“I believe by the year 2025, we can achieve that 30 percent, as our economy grows and as our rural economy develops further, women will be more focused and dedicated.
“Therefore, the expansion of the economy will also enhance women’s role and participation in the government and statutory bodies,” he said. Abang Johari was speaking in a dialogue session at a women leadership training programme, ‘Voices To Be Heard 2019’ held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday. He added that the 30 percent quota would serve as a guide but it has to grow organically depending on the capacity for it to self-develop.
“We will look into the statistics and rectify any weaknesses and find solution for the level of participation to reach its 30 percent target. “I believe that women can also one day helm the prime minister and chief minister position. If they perform well and balance the needs of society and bring about change, why not?” he quipped. Abang Johari pointed out that as the state adapted to a digital era, there would no longer be gender or racial bias.
“I may be wrong but I think that this is the future. This is because the landscape has changed where we longer cling on to the old ways. Now everyone is exposed to information and new technology.”
On another issue, Abang Johari said the state government was mulling an insurance plan to cater to senior citizens which would provide them healthcare and transportation benefits, among others. Also present at the event was Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
