MIRI: A total of 31 people pledged to donate their organs at the World Organ Donation Day and World Red Cross/Red Crescent Day blood donation programme here on Sunday.
MRCS Miri Branch Blood Donor Recruitment Committee chairman Karambir Singh said apart from that, 127 people successfully donated their blood.
The event, he said, was organised in conjunction with the World Organ Donation Day which is observed on August 13.
In Malaysia, 10, 893 people are waiting for organ transplants.
“Unfortunately, only 2,921 have undergone transplantation surgery since 1997. This means that there is a great need for organ donors,” said Karambir.
“Currently, this is the breakdown of the number of people awaiting transplants in Malaysia: 10,623 kidneys (adult), 240 kidneys (paediatric), 11 livers (adult), six livers (paediatric), 11 hearts, two heart and lungs.”
World Organ Donation Day is a day to remember its importance and to encourage people to become organ donors, he said.
