KUCHING: A total of 32 students participated in “Strive for Excellence in Maths” workshop held at Politeknik Kuching at Matang near here, recently.
The participants were students who have enrolled in the Pre-Diploma in Commerce and registered in their intensive Mathematics course.
With the realisation of the importance of Mathematics, a lecturer from Mathematics, Science and Computer Department of Politeknik Kuching, Cr. Dr. Ling Ying Leh conducted a one-day workshop for the Pre-Diploma in Commerce students.
The objectives of the workshop were to enable the students to gain new inputs in order to do well in their intensive Mathematics course, strengthened relationships between students and lecturers, as well enhance self-efficacy among the students.
Dr Ling said, “Increasingly, employers are looking for graduates with strong skills in reasoning and problem-solving, just the skills that are developed in a mathematics and statistics subjects.”
Dr Ling’s effort in helping the students should be followed by other lecturers in order to assist the students to strive for excellence in their learning process, said Politeknik Kuching, Head of Department, Zaulkafli Bin Mohamed.
The workshop featured some exciting activities such as problem-solving in Mathematics and games. Mathematics is arguably the greatest human invention. It is the oldest formalized science, and the best practitioners of this purest form of thought have become towering figures whose achievements shine through the centuries.
The subject equips individuals with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways.
Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.
A similar workshop is also planned for students enrolled in the Pre-Diploma in Science who have registered for the Discrete Mathematics course.
