KUCHING: A total of 33 suraus in Tupong constituency have received grants totalling RM495,000 for upgrading their facilities and infrastructure here on Saturday.
Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof presented the grants at a handover ceremony at Surau Mahmudi, Matang. Each surau received RM15,000.
“The grant will improve facilities support committee members of surau to hold community programmes and activities.
“I hope committee members of suraus in Tupong can have a collaboration to hold joint events because the grant allocation for suraus is not much as for mosques.
“We have to be creative to raise funds,” said Fadillah who is also Senior Minister of Works.
He added Islamic programme could be organised once a month for instance and famed scholars invited for religious talks.

Also present was Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
According to Fazzrudin, there are 50 suraus in Tupong area, which are very active in holding various activities such as religious programmes and talks.
“I know that suraus in Tupong are very active in holding various activities such as religious programme and talks.
“With grants given, I hope facilities can be upgraded to provide comfort to people who come.
“Thank you to Datuk (Fadillah) for giving us the special grants,” he added.
